Should you accelerate payments towards your mortgage?

I see people do this all the time, especially in the pre-retirement group. Many people are uncomfortable having any debt, including their mortgage, and they are driven to enter retirement “debt free.” To rid themselves of debt they make an additional payments of principle each month, on top of the regular monthly mortgage payment. Is that a good move? Maybe. Let me explain what I mean. When you pay off your debt, you are avoiding the loss of interest. By avoiding this loss, you now have more money in your account. Thus, by avoiding a loss you have gain! Let me illustrate with two similar scenarios: Scenario 1: You invest $100 into a vehicle that grows at a rate of 10% per year. After a year you will have your original $100 PLUS $10. Those $10 are the money you gained by investing your $100. Obviously. Scenario 2: You BORROW... View More

TSP Report for January 2017

Happy 2017!!! It’s time to update your TSP. This month my recommended allocations have shifted notably. You may see the higher portfolios are not as risky as they looked last month. I am here to help you reach your TSP goals. I monitor the data, apply it to the TSP, and make my recommendations based... Post-Election December TSP Report

The election is over. Now what? Just stick to the plan, and keep making your progress. Of course I have heard people preach with conviction that “the market is due for a correction.” Maybe, but there aren’t any indicators suggesting that. In fact, all of my indicators were hinting towards a stronger american economy. Instead of using hunches (or worse, the media) to make investment decisions, I just use the data, and make my recommendations based on the facts and the science. All this is done so you can keep on track to reach your TSP goals. Facts: The revised GDP growth for the 3rd Quarter 2016 is, once again, noteworthy.  GDP increased 3.2%.  This is compared to the 1.4% growth in the 2nd quarter.  This is the first time GDP has risen over 3% since the 3rd quarter of 2014. The S&P 500 also had notable gains of 3.76%, which... View More
